The lymphatic system is a collection of structures and vessels that drains lymph from blood and has several other functions. It is a circulatory system for lymph fluid and the site of many key immune system functions. The lymphatic vessels are the lymphatic system equivalent of the blood vessels of the circulatory system and drain fluid from the circulatory system.
Fish anatomy is the study of the form or morphology of fishes. It can be contrasted with fish physiology , which is the study of how the component parts of fish function together in the living fish. The anatomy of fish is often shaped by the physical characteristics of water, the medium in which fish live. Water is much denser than air, holds a relatively small amount of dissolved oxygen, and absorbs more light than air does. The body of a fish is divided into a head, trunk and tail, although the divisions between the three are not always externally visible. The skeleton, which forms the support structure inside the fish, is either made of cartilage cartilaginous fish or bone bony fish. The main skeletal element is the vertebral column , composed of articulating vertebrae which are lightweight yet strong.

Aristotle is properly recognized as the originator of the scientific study of life. Even Plato has Timaeus devote a considerable part of his speech to the human body and its functions and malfunctions. Nevertheless, before Aristotle, only a few of the Hippocratic treatises are both systematic and empirical, and their focus is almost exclusively on human health and disease. By contrast, Aristotle considered the investigation of living things, and especially animals, central to the theoretical study of nature. There was nothing of similar scope and sophistication again until the 16 th century. Before examining this remarkable achievement, a few words about its creator are in order. By then he had developed his own distinctive philosophical ideas, including his passion for the study of nature.
The supply of oxygen and nutrients to tissues is performed by the blood system, and involves a net leakage of fluid outward at the capillary level. One of the principal functions of the lymphatic system is to gather this fluid and return it to the blood system to maintain overall fluid balance. Fluid in the interstitial spaces is often at subatmospheric pressure, and the return points into the venous system are at pressures of approximately 20 cmH 2 O. This adverse pressure difference is overcome by the active pumping of collecting lymphatic vessels, which feature closely spaced one-way valves and contractile muscle cells in their walls. Passive vessel squeezing causes further pumping.
Daniel S. The mandate for this chapter is to review the anatomy and histology of the pancreas. The pancreas meaning all flesh lies in the upper abdomen behind the stomach. The pancreas is part of the gastrointestinal system that makes and secretes digestive enzymes into the intestine, and also an endocrine organ that makes and secretes hormones into the blood to control energy metabolism and storage throughout the body. It is worthwhile to mention a few definitions for key terms as used in the context of the pancreas:.

This major provides a program for studying the bodily and neural functions of complex organisms. Students may concentrate upon a more specialized area of study, such as neurobiology, animal physiology, or endocrinology. This major is designed to provide students with the fundamental courses required for entry into medical school, graduate school in biological or neural sciences, or entry into other health related professions such as nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy, physical education, agriculture and wildlife management. If you were admitted to UC San Diego prior to Fall , please refer to your degree audit, the UC San Diego General Catalog , or academic plan that aligns with your admit term for a listing of major requirements.
Attribution CC BY. Overall, I found this text to be very comprehensive. There are some differences between the terminology and approaches compared to what I am used to, but there were no significant gaps that I could see. Comprehensiveness rating: 5 see less. A couple of things that might be different from other books are the way movements are described in skeletal muscle function, and the description of functional organization of the nervous system. However, I found all the text to be accurate. Clarity of the prose is excellent.
