Download PDF. A short summary of this paper. A casual reader is often confused by such reports that project mutually contradictory findings. The main reasons for these confusions are the following. A scientific research is expected to be impartial and transparent.
But unfortunately, many a time the research studies are guided by personal interests of the people involved. There are several reasons for such biased views. So, one need to be careful while taking such research findings on its face.
Some of these are not even well defined. So, it is practically impossible to judge these systems. These people were the ones who had renounced the world, who had no interestneither in worldly riches nor in fame. We know very little about who Patanjali was, nor do we even know the names of the monks who proposed the Buddhist meditation techniques. Even Buddha, to whom Buddhist meditation techniques are normally attributed to, was an embodiment of renunciation, a prince who gave up his throne and chose to live as a wandering monk with a begging bowl as his only possession.
The interest of all these people was focused on welfare of the people at large. Neither these goals mean anything in terms of mundane worldly affairs. It is this confusion about the goals, or rather, wrong emphasis willful or otherwise on the achievable, that is one of the main causes for the negative findings in the research studies.
While making these comments, I am neither endorsing positive research findings nor condemning negative criticisms. You do this routinely when you approach a medical practitioner to address your health problems.
Why not do that while handling the most complex and precious organ of yours, namely the mind? On the contrary, you may explore new and rewarding territories; the reason being, these systems are amazingly well defined and they have stood the test of time.
Question 2: Is Kundalini power a myth? It makes no mention of any mystic force like Kundalini that lies dormant in some specific centre of the body, only to be awakened and channeled through different chakras, and finally get united with its destination at some centre in the brain. Buddhist meditation techniques too, focus on mind and only mind.
Kundalini concept is heavily influenced by ancient Tantric beliefs with an emphasis on 'conquering' sexual force. It is more popular in those regions of India where tantric practices were more predominant. A clear definition about this Kundalini based meditation is lacking.
Also, there are hardly any impartial research that is conducted on how it works, whether it works and whether there are any adverse effects. Surprisingly many Kundalini meditation practitioners themselves complain about adverse effects! Lot more clarity is needed before concluding either way. It is a well planned and purposeful mental conditioning aimed at a clearly defined goal.
Even the Buddhist meditation techniques basically involve mental conditioning, and again with well defined purpose. Mental conditioning is not bad in itself. All our religious practices and beliefs also involve mental conditioning. So also are all our moral codes of conduct and societal norms. Mental conditioning becomes bad when it results in adverse consequences or when we don't even know how these conditioning affect us.
These techniques are poorly understood and in most cases there is a shroud of secrecy that precludes open analysis and evaluation. More broad based research is needed before arriving at any conclusions. He also suggests techniques that potentially improve the health. Hundreds of asana are popular today, each one believed to have specific health benefits.
You may be surprised to know that Patanjali makes no mention about these asana. In fact, he talks very little about asana. He merely defines asana as certain body posture that is stable and comfortable at the same time.
The asana Patanjali is referring to seems to be more of a body posture that helps in prolonged meditation. However, there are several research studies that seem to suggest that the asana also have definite health benefits. They seem to be working by stimulating internal organs that are hard to reach through normal exercises.
Besides, these asana are normally clubbed with breathing rhythm that is known to calm down the mind. Since many of our health problems originate from a stressful mental condition, calming down of the mind definitely helps in better health. Though this is primarily meant to improve the mental concentration by calming down the mind, as I said earlier, this practice also has potential health benefits. There are also scientific studies indicating such benefits.

This book also gives a neuroscience based explanation on how Yoga helps as a health enhancer. Those who know about them get deterred by these steps since they feel it is almost impossible to practice them. In fact, many modern day Gurus totally ignore these steps.
These two steps are generally referred to as 'self control'. Though it is a bit out of place to go into the details of these steps, these steps basically containtruthfulness, non violence, non coveting of others possessions, not amassing unnecessary wealth, control over sexual desires, personal hygiene, contentment, withstanding extremities in life, reading of appropriate literature and finally faith in God.
We can try to practice them, to the best of our abilities. For those who have serious concerns about the two steps namely control of sexual desires and faith in God, I have the following to say. Patanjali does not really use the word 'sexual control'. He merely calls it Brahmacarya without defining what exactly it is. It is the commentators who have interpreted Brahmacarya as control of sexual desires. This word is used to mean variety of things in ancient Indian literature.
When one is a student he is expected to have control over his desires, sexual desire being one of them. This is imposed so that the student does not get distracted from his studies. But gradually, the word Brahmacarya started to be used to mean control over sexual desire or more specifically to mean total abstinence. So, the word Brahmacarya can be used to imply control over excessive desires. The other issue namely the faith in God may concern some people. They may see religious overtones in this word.
But Patanjali uses it only in two places. Moreover, the God defined by Patanjali is far from religious concept of God. It is just an option that can be ignored if one chooses to. It is more out of curiosity that people raise this question.
He gives some explanation on why these powers are attained. But many of these explanations don't look very convincing. Buy an air ticket instead! Yes, there is a strong belief in the existence of the soul; so also, almost all religions in the world, barring probably Buddhism. Though not prominently emphasized, there is also a belief in re-birth and attainment of ultimate freedom from the endless cycle of births and deaths. Even this aspect cannot be characterized as typical Hindu concept.
Most ancient religions had this notion in some form or the other. There are some mentions of God. But the God Patanjali is talking about is more of a concept than a religious artifact. If you closely see the way Patanjali defines this God, you can easily replace it with any other God -Jesus, Allah Question 8: Why am I not making any progress?
You cannot achieve much progress if you are not regular in your practice. A 'once in a blue moon thing' will not take you anywhere. Regularity should be in terms of periodicity, duration, time of practice and preferably place of practice. At the minimum, you need to practice once every day, at a fixed timepreferably early in the morning when the mind is fresh and amenable to modulation, for a fixed durationnot less than 20 minutes of intensive meditation, and preferably in the same calm and serene place of your choice.
The regularity I have described above is needed to shape the mind in a desirable fashion. If you have ever learnt any musical instrument, or you are a sports person, you will realize the importance of regular practice. While learning some motor skill such as playing an instrument or playing a game, it is mostly the body that is involved.
Some research studies indicate that a minimum of 20 minutes is needed to have any impact on the functioning of the mind.
So it is not sufficient to avoid external distractions, but we also need to have a control over the flood of thoughts that arise internally. This is where the first two steps -Yama and Niyama I discussed earlierbecome important. Yama and Niyama and even go to the extent of saying that they are not needed.
