Their names are derived from the signs of the zodiac tropic of Cancer for the northern hemisphere, tropic of Capricorn for the southern hemisphere. By extension, the parts of the globe that lie between these two parallels are characterised first of all by their climates. But they have also been envisaged in a wider perspective, and sometimes taken as a subject of geographical study. Every day in its daily trajectory, the sun reaches a maximum height above the horizon it "reaches its zenith" in the middle of the day, or at midday. To the north and to the south of the tropics the sun never reaches the vertical zenith, while between them the event occurs twice.
On Henry Miller: Or, How to Be an Anarchist
At the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, around June 21, the Sun attains its greatest declination north and is directly over the Tropic of Cancer. At that time the Sun appears in the constellation Gemini , but, much earlier in history, it lay in the constellation Cancer , thereby resulting in the designation Tropic of Cancer. Henry Valentine Miller was an American novelist and painter. He was known for breaking with existing literary forms and developing a new sort of 'novel' that is a mixture of novel, autobiography, social criticism, philosophical reflection, surrealist free association, and mysticism, one that is distinctly always about and expressive of the real-life Henry Miller and yet is also fictional. He also wrote travel memoirs and essays of literary criticism and analysis. Would you like to see only ebooks? Last edited by Lisa. November 16, History.
The American writer Henry Miller's critical reputation--if not his popular readership—has been in eclipse at least since Kate Millett's blistering critique in Sexual Politics , her landmark study of misogyny in literature and art. Miller wrote that "there is no salvation in becoming adapted to a world which is crazy," and in this short, engaging, and personal book, Burnside shows how Miller teaches us to become less adapted to the world, to resist a life sentence to the prison of social, intellectual, emotional, and material conditioning. Exploring the full range of Miller's work, and giving special attention to The Air-Conditioned Nightmare and The Colossus of Maroussi , Burnside shows how, with humor and wisdom, Miller illuminates the misunderstood tradition of anarchist thought. Along the way, Burnside reflects on Rimbaud's enormous influence on Miller, as well as on how Rimbaud and Miller have influenced his own writing. An unconventional and appealing account of an unjustly neglected writer, On Henry Miller restores to us a figure whose searing criticism of the modern world has never been more relevant. Henry Miller published Tropic of Cancer in Paris in He was convinced that it was a work of genius, and over the next several years a wide range of writers and critics agreed with him. But to official censors in England and America, the novel was nothing more than a particularly disgusting piece of pornography, too obscene to be allowed into either country. In this article, Kincaid and Koger trace the history of the novel from its inception in to its vindication by the United States judicial system 30 years later.
The Tropic of Capricorn or the Southern Tropic is the circle of latitude that contains the subsolar point at the December or southern solstice. It is thus the southernmost latitude where the Sun can be seen directly overhead. It also reaches 90 degrees below the horizon at solar midnight on the June Solstice. Its northern equivalent is the Tropic of Cancer. The Tropic of Capricorn is one of the five major circles of latitude marked on maps of Earth.
