DOI: A selective literature review of publications on life review generated ideas on implementation, theory, research, and therapy. The review begins by differentiating life review from reminiscence, and summarizing ways to conduct a life review. A dozen theories that have been influenced by the life review technique are presented, with a focus placed on Erikson's Stages of Psychosocial Development.

The author wishes to thank John E. Rhonda G. The goal of this article is to provide theoretical underpinnings for reminiscence by reviewing and evaluating previous research, and integrating it within a theoretical framework. Using a continuity theory perspective Atchley, , propositions are generated which may facilitate reminiscence research across the life span. Three global functions of reminiscence are derived from continuity theory private, social, and cognitive functions and are used as a foundation for the creation of seven propositions.

Don't have an account? Reminiscence and life review are significant natural coping mechanisms, and, as treatment modalities, both can help older adults find meaning through reflection on their life experiences. The appeal of reminiscence and life review for geriatric social workers and other mental health professionals, is that the interventions are non-judgmental, non-stigmatizing, and easy to provide to older adults.
Effects of reminiscence and life review on late-life depression: a meta-analysis
From the beginning of time there have been storytellers, before the written word there was the spoken word. Telling stories about ourselves is part of what makes us human. If we are not given the opportunity to be heard, we lose a significant part of our identity. There is growing research that giving an older person an opportunity to tell their story not only alleviates stress, loneliness and depression but can save money. Researchers; Bohlmeijer, Valenkamp, Westerhof, Smit, and Cuijpers used a pre—post test design that consisted of 12 group sessions, 2. The pretest and posttest one week after the intervention included well-established depression scales, measuring in part, -mastery and meaning of life.

Here, I got something to show you. They could hear him rapidly climbing the stairs. And he was in Thailand, so he could have just stayed there-or gone any of a dozen different places.
Background: Depression can occur in elderly, but it is not a part of normal aging. Untreated depression increases rates of completed suicide and mortality. Therefore, an effort to reduce depression level is needed. Reminiscence and psychoeducation therapy are assumed to be effective in reducing the level of depression in elderly. Objective: To compare the effects of reminiscence therapy alone and in combination with psychoeducation therapy on depression level in elderly. Methods: This study employed a quasi-experiment with comparison group design. Seventy-two respondents were selected in this study using a simple random sampling, which 36 were assigned in each group.
This study empirically investigates key propositions of a continuity theory approach to reminiscence. According to continuity theory, individuals seek familiarity in the face of uncertainty or impending change, which can accompany the aging process. Also of interest were differences in potential links between the content of reminiscence episodes and postreminiscence affect. Young adults in this sample reminisced significantly more frequently than older adults and were more likely to reminisce during times of change than were older adults. In addition, there was a direct relationship between the content of reminiscence episodes and postreminiscence affect, with older adults reporting greater emotional satisfaction after recalling the past than did younger adults. Findings lend support to continuity theory: Reminiscence occurs throughout the life span and should not be conceptualized as occurring most frequently in old age.
