Biophysical environment

A biophysical environment is a biotic and abiotic surrounding of an organism or population , and consequently includes the factors that have an influence in their survival, development, and evolution. It can also be subdivided according to its attributes.

Examples include the marine environment , the atmospheric environment and the terrestrial environment. The term environment can refer to a singular global environment in relation to humanity , or a local biophysical environment, e. All life that has survived must have adapted to the conditions of its environment. Temperature , light, humidity , soil nutrients, etc.

However life in turn modifies, in various forms, its conditions. Some long-term modifications along the history of the planet have been significant, such as the incorporation of oxygen to the atmosphere.

This process consisted in the breakdown of carbon dioxide by anaerobic microorganisms that used the carbon in their metabolism and released the oxygen to the atmosphere. This led to the existence of oxygen-based plant and animal life, the great oxygenation event.

Environmental science is the study of the interactions within the biophysical environment. Part of this scientific discipline is the investigation of the effect of human activity on the environment.

Ecology , a sub-discipline of biology and a part of environmental sciences, is often mistaken as a study of human-induced effects on the environment. Environmental studies is a broader academic discipline that is the systematic study of interaction of humans with their environment. It is a broad field of study that includes:. Environmentalism is a broad social and philosophical movement that, in a large part, seeks to minimize and compensate the negative effect of human activity on the biophysical environment.

The issues of concern for environmentalists usually relate to the natural environment with the more important ones being climate change , species extinction , pollution , and old growth forest loss. One of the studies related include employing Geographic Information Science to study the biophysical environment. Biophysics is a multidisciplinary study utilizing systems from physics to study biological phenomena.

Social environment

Environment can be defined as the surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal, or plant lives or operates. Environment plays pre-eminent role in the life cycle of human being as human life is highly dependent on environment. Environment is the grand total of conditions that surrounds us at a given point of time and space. It is comprised of the interacting systems of physical, biological and cultural elements which are interlinked both individually and collectively. Environment is the sum total of conditions in which an organism has to survive or maintain its life process. It influences the growth and development of living organism.

Many environmental factors, including water diversions, affect the structure and functioning of biotic communities in the delta. Although the ecosystem has been radically altered over the past years, it nonetheless remains a biologically diverse and productive ecosystem. In addition, species composition and environmental conditions in the delta have undergone large changes over the period. Interactions among stressors and between stressors and ecosystem processes are common.

Violence rates, whose main victims are the youth, women and children, have been increasing. The WHO defines violence as "the intentional use of physical force.

Environment and its components

Concept of environment and ecology The combination of biotic and abiotic factors composes environment, which surrounds us and other organisms. Abiotic factors includes water, air, soil, light, temperature, etc that affects human beings the least. Biotic factors are other factors that influence the environment much more in comparison to abiotic factors. Biotic factors consists all forms of life like animals, plants, micro-organisms, etc. Human is an incorporated part of the environment and have very intimate relationship with each other.

The environment is an evergreen subject because it matters a lot to our daily lives. Our life support systems entirely rely on the well-being of every organism living on planet earth. This is why a lot has been written and spoken about the protection and conservation of the environment.

Study review of biological, social and environmental factors associated with aggressive behavior. METHOD: A search was carried out in two electronic databases, Medline and SciElo by retrospective studies, longitudinal and review that assessed risk factors for the development of aggressive behavior. RESULTS: There were selected 11 longitudinal studies 8 prospective and 3 case-control studies and a cross sectional study that evaluated the risk factors and socio-biological related to aggressive behavior. Five studies have evaluated gene expression, five evaluated exposure to tobacco, alcohol and cocaine in the prenatal period, one evaluated the effect of early malnutrition on the development of aggressive behavior and one assessed the impact of child maltreatment. The main environmental factors were: child abuse, poverty, crime and antisocial behavior in childhood, while the highest level of evidence was related to early neglect.

Ecosystems are dynamically interacting systems of organisms , the communities they make up, and the non-living components of their environment. Ecosystem processes, such as primary production , pedogenesis , nutrient cycling , and niche construction , regulate the flux of energy and matter through an environment. These processes are sustained by organisms with specific life history traits. Ecology is not synonymous with environmentalism or strictly natural history. Ecology overlaps with the closely related sciences of evolutionary biology , genetics , and ethology.

NCBI Bookshelf. The previous chapters of this report focused on health systems and individual and household-level risks that might explain the U. In contrast with traditional environmental health approaches that focus primarily on toxic substances in air, water, and soil, this more recent approach conceptualizes the environment more broadly to encompass a range of human-made physical and social features that are affected by public policy Frumkin, These economic, social, urban or rural, transportation, and other policies that affect the environment were not traditionally thought of as relevant to health policy but are now attracting greater attention because decision makers are beginning to recognize their health implications Cole and Fielding, By definition, environmental factors affect large groups that share common living or working spaces. Thus, they are key candidates as explanatory factors for health differences across geographic areas, such as countries.

The social environment , social context , sociocultural context or milieu refers to the immediate physical and social setting in which people live or in which something happens or develops. It includes the culture that the individual was educated or lives in, and the people and institutions with whom they interact. The social environment is a broader concept than that of social class or social circle. The physical and social environment is a determining factor in active and healthy aging in place, being a central factor in the study of environmental gerontology. People with the same social environment often develop a sense of social solidarity ; people often tend to trust and help one another, and to congregate in social groups. They will often think in similar styles and patterns, even though the conclusions which they reach may differ.
