Ensuring a healthy learning environment for youth is a top priority for educational institutions, families, health agencies, policymakers, and other stakeholders. Though the overall evidence base for what works in school safety is somewhat limited, research has found that addressing and improving school climate, targeting bullying behavior, and using research and evidence to guide violence prevention are some of the critical steps for creating and maintaining a safe learning environment for students. A positive school climate embraces respect between students, teachers, and administration; offers ample opportunities for student engagement; emphasizes strong values of equality and inclusion; and communicates shared norms and goals.

Following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in , Everytown began tracking all cases of gunfire on school grounds.

For all groups of students, getting back at those who hurt them; having other kids pick on them, make fun or them or bully them; not valuing life; and being a victim of abuse were consistently among the top five reasons, regardless of what variables were used to analyze the data. Consistently ranked at the bottom among the reasons were being bored; being afraid for their own safety; and being encouraged by others to shoot. If we look at the means of responses students offered for each of 16 reasons, we get a similar picture. The top four reasons were:. There were some variations in ranking based on gender.

Trauma, Violence, and School Shooting

Over the past few years, gun violence has risen to the forefront of public consciousness. Much of the debate has focused on gun regulation and keeping deadly weapons out of the hands of potential killers, particularly those with mental illnesses. Unfortunately, far less attention has been dedicated to the impact of gun violence on victims. While individuals killed and injured in atrocities such as the Sandy Hook and Aurora Theater shootings are publicly remembered and mourned, victims of these tragedies are not limited to those men, women, and children killed, injured, or present during these horrific events. The consequences of gun violence are more pervasive and affect entire communities, families, and children. In fact, most people with mental illnesses are not violent and are actually more likely to be victimized than they are to victimize others Teplin et al, While much more can be done to address the problems of perpetrators with a mental illness, that conversation alone will not address the problems associated with gun violence.

Guns in schools are an unnecessary and significant threat to the safety of children and college students. Schools should be a safe haven from the violence that touches so many Americans, yet many states lack proper legal protection against the presence of firearms in schools. Dangerous gaps in gun-free schools laws, like concealed carry exceptions, threaten the safety of children and increase the likelihood of tragic school shootings. The tragedies that took place at Sandy Hook, 1 Columbine, 2 Virginia Tech, 3 and other schools across the US 4 demonstrate the devastating effect guns have on our school communities. Calls to arm teachers or to allow college students to carry guns will only lead to more gun deaths and injuries, not fewer. Shootings at K—12 schools shock us because schools are generally safe havens from the gun violence that is so prevalent elsewhere. A report issued by the US Departments of Education and Justice found that between and , at least 50 times as many murders of young people ages 5—18 occurred away from school than at school.

Jump to navigation. Trauma can occur to children and youth as a result of violence, abuse, neglect, loss, and other emotionally harmful experiences. Community violence, such as school shootings or volatile communities may cause trauma. While many people who experience trauma continue their lives without lasting negative effects, others experience impaired neurodevelopmental and immune system responses. There may be subsequent health risk behaviors resulting in chronic physical and behavioral disorders. The following resources may be useful for parents, service providers or educators who are working with children or youth who are experiencing or have experienced trauma:. Exploring School Violence and Safety Concerns

Violence such as high profile school shootings can cause concern within school communities, even if they are not directly affected by the event s. Adults and students struggle to understand why these events happen and, more importantly, how they can be prevented. School principals and superintendents can provide leadership by reassuring students, staff, and parents that schools are generally very safe places for children and youth, and reiterating what safety measures and student supports are already in place in their school. Administrators can reinforce the importance of creating a caring school community in which adults and students respect and trust each other and all students feel connected, understand expectations, and receive the behavioral and mental health support they need. Messages to the community following a violent event can reassure parents and students about the safety of their schools. Here are some possible school violence prevention strategies that reinforce school safety:.

Department of Education and the U. Department of Justice, reveals that public schools experiencing violent incidents increased from 71 to 81 percent over a five-year period The same study reports that the percentage of students who reported gang presence at school increased from 21 percent in to 24 percent in Although no direct connection between gang activity and school violence can be established, the initiation of gang activity in neighborhoods and schools does frequently coincide with increased violence reports. School violence does not limit itself to the student population.
