Carbon capture and storage CCS , or carbon capture and sequestration and carbon control and sequestration , [1] is the process of capturing waste carbon dioxide CO 2 , transporting it to a storage site, and depositing it where it will not enter the atmosphere. If we were in a global war against climate change, we would carry out large-scale carbon capture, utilization, and storage CCUS Smit et al. Some argue that if we fight the war against climate change via CCUS, this implies that we are promoting the continued use of fossil fuels instead of replacing fossil fuels by renewable energy such as solar and wind. Most, if not all, of the energy scenarios predict an increase in the share of the renewables, but in absolute numbers the fossil fuels will continue to provide most of our energy needs in the foreseeable future. This is simply because the growth in renewable energy will not be able to keep up with our increasing energy demand associated with a growing world population. In such a scenario, a war against climate change without CCUS implies that we have to dramatically reduce our current energy consumption, and hence, accept a dramatic reduction in GDP. Thus, the adaptation of large-scale CCUS might be inevitable to mitigate ever-increasing CO 2 emissions with given population growth predictions. At present, there are still very few signs of starting a war against climate change soon.

Accelerating deployment of carbon capture technology is essential to reduce emissions from these power plants, and from industrial plants like cement and steel manufacturing. For models without carbon capture, emissions reduction costs rose percent. For nearly a half century, in a practice called enhanced oil recovery EOR , carbon dioxide has been used to extract additional oil from developed oil fields in the United States. There is strong bipartisan support to accelerate carbon capture deployment. The legislation reforms and extends a federal tax credit to boost carbon capture, known as Section 45Q.

To limit global warming and mitigate climate change, the global economy needs to decarbonize and reduce emissions to net-zero by mid-century. The asymmetries of the global energy system necessitate the deployment of a suite of decarbonization technologies and an all-of-the-above approach to deliver the steep CO 2 -emissions reductions necessary. Carbon capture and storage CCS technologies that capture CO 2 from industrial and power-plant point sources as well as the ambient air and store them underground are largely seen as needed to address both the flow of emissions being released and the stock of CO 2 already in the atmosphere. Despite the pressing need to commercialize the technologies, their large-scale deployment has been slow. Initial deployment, however, could lead to near-term cost reduction and technology proliferation, and lowering of the overall system cost of decarbonization. As of November , more than half of global large-scale CCS facilities are in the USA, thanks to a history of sustained government support for the technologies. Recently, the USA has seen a raft of new developments on the policy and project side signaling a reinvigorated push to commercialize the technology.
