Last month Mr Macqueen's article dealt generally with solid geometry and industrial drawing. In the present article Mr Howarth, who is a member of the SBAC Committee on the Training of Draughtsmen, follows this with the development of 1st and 3rd angle projection in particular.

Orthographic Projection

First Angle and Third Angle are two methods orthographic projection used in technical drawing and normally comprises the three views perspectives : front, top and side. In other words, Orthographic projection is a way of drawing a 3D object from different directions. Usually front, top and side views are drawn so that a person looking at the drawing can see all the important sides. Orthographic drawings are useful especially when a design has been developed to a stage whereby it is almost ready to manufacture.

First angle and third angle only differ in the position of the top, front and side views. First angle projection is a method of creating a 2D drawing of a 3D object. In first angle, the object is placed in the first quadrant.

This means that the vertical plane is behind the object and the horizontal plane is underneath the object.

First angle projection method is used in Europe, India, Canada and the rest of world as a default projection system. Third angle projection is a method of creating a 2D drawing of a 3D object.

In third angle, the object is placed in the third quadrant. This means that the plane of projection is between the observer and the object. Third angle projection is used in Australia and United States as a default projection system for industrial designs for product fabrication. Viva Differences. To get the first angle projection, the object is placed between the plane of projection and the observer. To get a third angle projection, the plane of projection is between the observer and the object.

In the first angle projection schema, the plane of projection is assumed to be opaque or non-transparent. The object is placed in front of the planes and each view is pushed through the object which places the vertical plane behind the object and pushes the horizontal plane underneath.

In the third angle projection, the plane of projection is assumed to be transparent and the object is placed below the horizontal plane and behind the vertical plane. In the first angle projection, the orthographic view is projected on a plane located beyond the object and the observer is on the left side of the object and projects the side view on a plane beyond the object.

In third angle projection, the observer is on the right side of the object and the orthographic view is projected on a plane located between the view point and the object. The right side view is projected to the left of the front view and the top view is projected onto the bottom of the front view.

The right view is projected onto the right side of the front view and the top view is projected above the front view.

First Angle Projection Pdf

First angle projection and Third angle projection are two different methods of creating a 2D drawing of a 3D part. First Angle Projection is commonly used in all countries other than United States. It is mainly used in Europe and Asia countries. Following table describes what is the difference between or comparison between First Angle Projection vs Third Angle projection. Following are the details description of first angle projection vs third angle projection given in text note from above table for better readability. Also Read Mechanical Engineering Basics. Every engineer must know how to read engineering drawings and the most integral part of this is knowing the difference between first and third angle projection. A collection of 2D drawings can be used to represent a 3D object in orthographic projection and consists of six orthographic views Top, Bottom, Right, Left, Front and Back view also known as six principle views. Out of these six, front, right side and top view are the most commonly used ones. But how do you get these orthographic views from a 3D object? We essentially have two main types of projection techniques, the First angle projection, and the Third angle projection. Both of them do the same job, but there are differences in the way we get the results. Divide the plane into four quadrants.

Multiview projection

The orthographic projection system is used to represent a 3D object in a 2D plane. The orthographic projection system utilizes parallel lines, to project 3D object views onto a 2D plane. According to the rule of orthographic projection. To draw a projection view of a 3D object on a 2D Plane.

There are two types of drawing in orthographic, First Angle and Third Angle. They differ only in the position of the plan, front and side views. First angle orthographic projection used mainly in Europe. Third angle which is used in USA. In the first angle projection, the object is placed in the 1st quadrant.

First Angle Projection

In technical drawing and computer graphics , a multiview projection is a technique of illustration by which a standardized series of orthographic two-dimensional pictures are constructed to represent the form of a three-dimensional object. Up to six pictures of an object are produced called primary views , with each projection plane parallel to one of the coordinate axes of the object. The views are positioned relative to each other according to either of two schemes: first-angle or third-angle projection. In each, the appearances of views may be thought of as being projected onto planes that form a six-sided box around the object. Although six different sides can be drawn, usually three views of a drawing give enough information to make a three-dimensional object. These views are known as front view , top view and end view.

Collection of 2D drawings which enables you to have a complete representation of an object is called orthographic projection.
